This is a ¾ inch BSP fitting screened cowl vent from Norscreen to exclude insects from water storage tanks, in accordance with paragraph 16 of Schedule 2 of The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 [previously required by Water Byelaw 30(2)].

These vents are designed to allow air to flow in and out of a small water cistern as the water level changes, while preventing insects from entering. The set comprises a tank connector with a ¾ inch BSP thread, supplied with EPDM washers, and a press-on top section.

The tank connector suits insulation up to 75mm thick. If space is restricted and the insulation is thinner, it can be reduced in length for which cutting guides are moulded in at 25mm intervals.

The top section comprises a plastic carrier, which holds a 57 micron stainless steel mesh insect screen. The screen is held in place and protected from falling dust or rain by a plastic cap that can be removed to allow the screen to be cleaned.

Cowl Vent Fitting

The vent is easily fitted by following the instructions below:

  1. Drill a 27mm diameter hole in the tank lid at a convenient point.
  2. Fit the tank connector through the hole from above, ensuring that one sealing washer is on the threaded part before doing so.
  3. Secure from inside with the nut and the second sealing washer.

Maintenance

The stainless steel screen should be inspected and cleaned periodically and replaced if necessary.

To access the screen, pull off the lid and remove screen, using long nose pliers to grip the tab provided for this purpose.

Note: The screens are manufactured from stainless steel mesh and may have sharp edges. It is recommended that gloves are used for protection when handling the screens.

After cleaning, the screen should be carefully seated in the recess and pressed down firmly.

To replace the lid, place in position and press down firmly.
